Thunderbolt 5 Explained

Thunderbolt 5 is the latest generation of Thunderbolt connections. Apple introduced Thunderbolt 5 with the Mac mini (M4 Pro), MacBook Pro 14", and MacBook Pro 16". Other Mac models do not yet have Thunderbolt 5, but it’s only a matter of time before they are equipped with this connection as well.

A common misconception is that Thunderbolt is an Apple technology. In reality, Thunderbolt was developed by Intel; Apple uses it in its Mac models.

What is Thunderbolt 5?

Thunderbolt 5 is the new networking standard that supports bidirectional connections up to 80 Gbit/s via a single USB‑C cable.

At first glance, the connector looks the same as Thunderbolt 3 and 4, but under the hood, the differences are significant. The main differences between Thunderbolt 5 and Thunderbolt 3/4 are:

  1. 80 Gbps bidirectional throughput speed — was 40 Gbps with Thunderbolt 3 and 4
  2. Boost up to 120 Gbps throughput speed for demanding tasks
  3. Connect up to three 4K displays or two 8K displays simultaneously
  4. PCIe up to 64 Gbps — was 32 Gbps with Thunderbolt 3 and 4
